課程概述 |
The importance of upper ocean to the forecast of tropical cyclones (typhoons) has been explored for more than decades, but various challenges in the upper ocean dynamics still remain unsolved. It directly affects model capabilities on simulating storm-induced ocean response, especially for those interested in the short-term weather forecast. Therefore, the first half of the course is aimed to introduce the key dynamics in the view of ocean response to tropical cyclones, including surface wave dynamics and upper ocean turbulent mixing. In the second half of the course, a surface waves model (WAVEWATCH III) and an oceanic model (PWP3D) will be introduced, in order to simulate the ocean response to tropical cyclones. Students will be asked for finishing a final project using the models. The results need to be presented in class. |
